World AIDS Day is held on the 1st December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.

Fact 1:
HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, infects cells of the
immune system, which is the body's defence against infections and diseases.
Fact 2:
HIV virus was identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.
Fact 3:
When HIV develops into Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is the final stage of the HIV infection, it can lead to health issues like pneumonia, fungal infections and tuberculosis
Fact 4:
In 2014, there were 36.9 million [34.3 million–41.4 million] people living with HIV.
Since 2000, around 38.1 million people have become infected with HIV and 25.3 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses.
As of June 2015, 15.8 million people living with HIV were accessing
antiretroviral therapy, up from 13.6 million in June 2014.
Fact 5:
Between 2009 and 2014, 84 out of 121 low- and middle income countries
increased their domestic spending on AIDS. Of these countries, 46 reported an increase of more than 50%, including 35 countries which reported an increase in domestic spending of more than 100%.

AIDS is the number one cause of death among adolescents in Africa and the second among adolescents globally.

Despite widespread availability of HIV testing, only an estimated 51% of people with HIV know their status.
