After a series of hard work, notable sacrifices and lots of prayers to get a varsity admission, one would think that it is "done and dusted" when it finally comes. Only to discover that the journey has just started. Registration, screening, and matriculation among some others are levels that one has to pass through successfully before he could even be qualified for that "fresher" title. One important challenge that a fresher would face is hostel accommodation. Whether you have decided to stay on Campus or not,you will have to be extremely careful. Now,I am not discussing bill. But I want to enlighten our "would be" freshmen on the dangers of choosing the wrong roomie.Although staying alone is very possible for those who have the financial capacity to do so. But judging from the present economic situation,that seems not feasible. Without even bringing the current economic realities into play, having a roommate can be a very wonderful experience.
Why do you need a roommate ?
The essence of coming to the University is not only to learn and get degrees. Exposure is very key in human development. For the world to integrate,grow and develop,there is need for a broad scope of interpersonal relationships.
Since the University is a very big institute of learning,be sure to find people of diverse backgrounds and distinguished ideologies. Having roommates would however allow for an opportunity to mingle, exchange cultures and ideology. It is also important to meet new people so that we can learn to be tolerant. Especially for a Country like Nigeria, which is heterogeneous in structure and with the secession tendencies that we deal with,we need to mix and accommodate one another.
In fact, the world is at a crucial stage in its existence when we need to improve the level of "integrated and peaceful cohabitation".
This is needed especially to put the tension of 'religious bigotry' to rest and deal with terrorism in the most conceptive manner.
There is also the global issue of 'racial disparity' that needs to be curbed with a high degree of calmness and orientation on peaceful cohabitation. These are the reasons why one needs to meet with new set of people.
Types of roommates :
Now you know what it means to have a roomie right ? Its so cool but there is more to it. You need to have proper guidance so as not to make the wrong choice of person.
Just as we all know,the world consists of different people with divergent characters and of which we are all entitled to as included in the fundamental human rights on freedom.
How can this affect you ?
There is a popular saying that goes thus ;
"Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are." It means that the people you mingle with have some high level of influence in your life. As much as am aware that many of us are mature enough to make decisions and consider options before taking actions, there is still a portion of affection that your roomie-options can have on your notions
In short, you need to be careful. These are people you want to live with for a period of four(4) years or more than. That is why you need to know the type of roommates we have.
The serious type :
This particular category of roommates are those that could help your course in the University. They are studious, not antisocial but time conscious and sometimes can be very good confidants.
The unserious elements :
These ones do not really care about their primary assignments in school. They can be so distractive and annoying. They skip classes, they enjoy parties. But of course you should not be surprised when they still end up having good grades. They know how to manipulate their ways. And their slogan is very easy :
'Eni ti o mo way,l'ò mo iwe'. That is, 'a scholar is a knower of manipulation'.
They call themselves sharp guys and big babes. If you have listened to a track titled Bad gang by Ajjebutter ft. Falz,then you will understand better.
The handicaps :
These people are neither bad nor good. They have been made handicapped by nature. And I can also refer to them as the needy. It is now up to you whether you are ready to live with them or not. There are three types of handicaps on Campus.
1. Emotional handicaps :
These ones are frustrated human being. They will 'carry over' the trauma in their family to school. They won't stop telling you about their broken home, the child abuse they have passed through, societal maltreatments.. Bla ! Bla ! Bla !!!
All you need to do is keep encouraging them and help them get over their emotional burdens. But hey !
If you can't do it,its not by force.
2. Intellectual handicaps :
Sometimes, you might be forced to wonder how these people gained admission in the first place. They can be so annoying. They don't behave like literates at all. And as if that is not enough, they have an ironically presentable grades. All they need from you is help. That is why you have met them. That is why they are handicap. Do your best to help a friend. At your own leisure,tutor them and share moral ideas with them.
3. Financial handicap :
Fingers are not equal. For this category of people, they would depend a lot on you for foods and even sometimes, money. Not that they are selfish or stingy,but they don't have. They hardly get allowance and when they get,it is peanuts. Be kind enough to help if you have such a roommate. Kindness has a bank !
The fake guys :
These ones are the Alakadas. They will tell you that their Dad owns Con Oil. They are always related to every big man. They travel to at least three Countries for summer.
OMG !
Buh guy why ?
These people are very dangerous to stay with because they will do everything possible to stay consistent with the lies. The girls can start runz business and the boy would start to "chache" Don't be surprised when someone breaks your neighbour's door.

The O.B.O :
These ones are difficult to find. But if you are very lucky, please don't let go. In fact they rarely live with roommates because they can afford a whole flat. But some of them can't just live alone and that is why they look for a roomie. With them,half of your problems are solved. You won't even miss home for a bit because everything has been made available. There is food,plasma T.V,home theatre, a 3 months DSTV subscription, enough money to spend and you might even get clothes and shoes. The parents are just so rich. Some might even have cars they take to school.
Oh boy !
If na me.. I no go fuck up.
Because all they need from you is to be a good companion.
I hope with these analysis of mine,you will be able to make the right choice of roommates. This article is also useful for the returning students that might want to relocate or have a new roommate.
