STORY : WHAT WENT WRONG (Episode 4)

Long time ago there were two best friends named Chanda and Chibuye. They were the heart of the community, everyone loved and admired them. They got along like sisters, they did everything together. They had the same dreams but as they say "nothing lasts forever." One day a certain young man came to the village to look for a woman to marry.

He didn't let his intensions known as it would be difficult to find a decent good hearted woman so he disguised himself as a poor dirty man. He sat along the road leading to the village well begging for water and food. Many people that passed through that road rebuked him, some insulted him, others attacked him and went to report him to the village elders.

One afternoon the headman sent for youths to bring the poor man to his home.
"Young man what are you doing in my village?"
"Sir I come to search for shelter."
"Where do you come from?"
"I don't know sir."
The headman didn't go further with any questions, he believed the young man was a fallen soldier who lost his memory. He suggested the young man to remain in the village until he was fully conscious to remember anything about himself. Some people were not happy with the headman's decision, they tried to oppose but it was against the law to question the headman's decision. The young man thanked the headman for his kindness.
The man went back to his spot, he continued the life as a beggar. The two best friends were coming from the well. When the young man saw them, he knelt down asking for clean water to drink.
"Young ladies please would you spare some clean water for me to drink, I'm thirsty."
"Thirsty" replied Chanda, if you were thirsty you would have gone to the well. You surely don't look lame to me.
"Chanda why are you like this, this man just asked for clean water. You don't have to be rude to him." Chibuya replied.
"So you want me to entertain lousy, dirty, stinking beggars from unknown sources. Chibuye you are insane."
"You don't have to say all that just to phrase out your opinion, mind you this man is human just like us."
"I doubt he's like us. Look at him he looks like he was cursed. I'm sure he did some something, our gods punished him."
"Our God is a kind God he cannot punish his own."
"Then explain why he looks like this."
"I conquer with the headman, this man should be a fallen soldier. Who knows maybe he has lost his memory."
"You are too nice for nothing Chibuya, you being nice to a stranger you hardly know."

"Shut up, let me give the poor man some water to drink, he looks thirsty to me besides water is a natural resource we get from God."
Chibuya gave the beggar water to drink as well as some wild fruits she had with her. Chanda was on and about cautioning Chibuya for helping the poor man. Chibuye apologized to the young man for the way her friend treated him. He smiled and blessed Chibuya. The young lads argued on their way home.
From that day onwards the young man knew he had found himself a good wife. During night he went back to his village, he told his father the chief about a beautiful lady he had met from another village. The dad told him to be careful and find out more about the mysterious lady. The next morning, the young man went back to the village. To his surprise Chibuya brought him some food and water. She told him to eat as fast as he could. The young man ate the food staring at Chibuya.
Chibuya ran back to her home, she bumped into Chanda on her way back.
"Where are you heading to?"
"Nowhere."
"Okay where are you coming from?"
"They say the earliest bird catches the worm," I had gone to look for fruits before anyone passes through.
"Then why are you panting? Where are the fruits you say you went to collect?"
"I wasn't so lucky, it seems others went earlier than me."
"Why do I have a feeling you are lying to me?"
(Mediapronounce ng)
"Chanda nakupapata luchelo luno stop with all the insane Interrogations."
"You are being defensive which implies that you are lying."
"You have a problem young lady."
"You know I know you better than anyone does right, I know you are up to something."
"Its all in your head."
Considering the way Chanda treated the poor young man, Chibuya wasn't willing to tell her dear friend. This would just add salt to the wound so she kept quiet.
Chibuye made it her daily routine to give the poor man food, she got to learn more about him. His name was Muma. They talked about a lot of things. Eventually they became friends, Chibuye spent more time with the stranger than Chanda. This angered Chanda, her best friend stopped spending time with her. She wondered where Chibuye went to and who she was with.
One afternoon Chibuya strolled around her compound. Pictures of Muma flashed through her mind. She had not seen him that day.
Chibuye's compound opened a branch of paths leading to many houses. Chanda's house was at the far end.
That evening Chanda noticed her friend wasn't her usual self. She knew her friend very well. She was on to something.
Chibuye got a few things from the house, wrapped them on a cloth. She looked around the yard and took off. Chanda followed, she wanted to find out why her best friend was sneaking.
Chibuye finally got to the stream. She called out for Muma who come out from the woods. She gave him the food. They chatted about the weather, he told her how much he missed her.
Chanda overhead everything and went back to the village. She told the village elders that she saw the stranger eloping with Chibuye. The entire village went to the stream. Unbeknownst to Chibuye and Muma, the whole village was on them. When they got to the stream, Chibuye was swimming while Muma sat on the edge watching her. The youths held Muma, they took him to the village square. He was banned from the village. Chibuye tried to reason with the elders, she told them the accusations labelled against them were false. That evening Muma left, no one knew where he had gone to. Chibuye looked for him everywhere, there was no trace of him.
She was so sad, she felt a part of her missing. She had grown fond of Muma.
Chanda came to her place pretending to have no knowledge of what happened. She tried to comfort Chibuye. Chanda was very happy that she chased Muma away.
