State of education in our country, Nigeria: massive production of failure (Must Read)

State of education in our country, Nigeria: massive production of failure.

Curled from my experience in a secondary school that I was posted for my teaching practice 17/18 session.

Nigeria as a country is greatly and massively doing well in the production of students on a yearly basis as they are assumed to have completed the expected level of education which is the tertiary level. It is on a yearly increase the number of students that graduates per annum. With all these yearly mass production of graduates, why still is the state of the country in terms of development and civilization on the decline?

The journey of any person that has obtained a tertiary level certification started right from the nursery and primary level. At each level of education, a child is expected to have acquired some certain type of knowledge as per the level which is to serve as a prerequisite to the next level ahead. It is a shame to the country for the poor state of the system of education in such ways that the children in the primary level of education are not up to the minimum required standard for acceptance into the junior secondary level. But in spite, these children are rather promoted to the next level and thereby continue thereon.

At the primary level, a child is expected to have acquired numeracy and literacy skills as per their level for Education is a gradual process, from known to the unknown. But, the reverse is the case for most of our children in and that are leaving the primary level for the junior secondary level. How would a pupil that is becoming a student be able to cope with the type of knowledge to be received in the junior level when the minimum required skills, numeracy and literacy are not acquired as it is ought to, inasmuch that the new knowledge to be transmitted will be based on the primary skills that are assumed to have been acquired by the pupil? Whose fault?

"The journey continues, from the junior secondary level to the senior secondary level is a period of three years to be spent by each student. This level determines what type of career a student would want to venture at the end of the three years in the school. With all these, it is expected that the schools available should be able to develop these young minds to the optimum level required since the students are just like clay at the time waiting to be mould! Why are we having products that are Less in worth and quality compared to what is aspired?"

Cutting the long story short, these has been the continuous practice right form the primary level to the secondary level and this as a result has lead to difficulty in securing admission to a tertiary institution by students purposely because they are moulded not up to the standard and has thereby lead to the development of weak minds in terms of education.

Ever increasing consequences in the society is the production of graduates that are merely certified by school and not by Education and which is a massive failure to the nation on a yearly basis.

The development of the developed nations are based not on certification by school but by the right, full and proper type of knowledge that is been disseminate and that is why they are always able to bring about new innovations and inventories. The opposite is on the daily increase in Nigeria.

What is the cause of these endemic problem in the system of education? Since the development of a graduate individual started from the primary level, therefore the root of the problem should be traced back to it since it is the foundation of the learning process in an individual. Out there in the societies, there are several nursery and primary schools that are not worth it in terms of the management, teachers, building and environment and they have the license approval by the government for operation in the societies and this is where lives of the young leaders of tomorrow as children are being called will be taken to for their schooling. There are some schools that employ secondary school leave students as teachers in their school, what a misery!

A secondary school leaver student that went through same thing the young children are presently going and about to go through employed to teach these children, who is transmitting the knowledge? What knowledge is such an individual transmitting?

Transmission of error from one generation of error to another generation, a continuous transfer of error.
Another case is the building and environment where these schools are sited are not standard enough to be called schools, some are located in noisy environment, market areas and many structures that are below average. Now, the probing questions are what are the requirements for setting up a school in our societies? Is it just about money and connection?

Talking about the junior and senior secondary level of education, there are so much of private schools out there that public schools (government) students do crave to do their school leaving examinations because what most of these schools know is money which makes it easy for students to easily clear their results at once. Why are students in public schools' performances very low compared to private schools' students?

The controller of the whole affairs of the country is the government and they are the management of these secondary schools, is it fund they lack to bring public schools to standard or a deliberate effort to make the leaders of tomorrow defective when it is time for them to make exploits?

Why would there be division among Nigerian students, private schools students are more brilliant than the public schools students! Private schools are more considered admission than most government schools! Another factor is that not all private schools are actually transmitting the right of knowledge.

Another case in the secondary school is the fact that the teachers been employed are not from the field but due to the unemployment rate of people in the country, an accountant is consideredemployment as a teacher and thereby becomes a teacher, now the question is, does this type of employee have the pre-service knowledge of a teacher? And he or she is expected to perform well as a teacher. The issue of building structures and environment are applicable to both the primary and secondary level in private and secondary schools respectively.

The issue of tertiary institution level is a story for another day as the preceding is the determinant for the tertiary.

WAY OUT;

The government of the country is expected to take absolute proper control of the mode of handling of the Educational system of the country. The government should carefully do a thorough check and investigation before giving license to any private individuals for starting a school up. Also the teachers to be employed are to be carefully screened under a proper scrutinization process so as to be able to employ the right man for the job persons.
The government schools needs to be checked even more than the private because how would the schools owned by government be far less in performances to the schools owned by private individuals? The government should provide enough resources so that there would not be division among students ever again since what is been learnt in the private schools and public schools are quality education. The summary of the whole solution is the unrelenting efforts of the government to check into the affairs of the schools so as to enable a brighter future for the children starting for the primary level to the tertiary even after school.
